A Town Called Eureka

Human frailty and powerful science

A (Confidential) Town History

As World War II came to a close with mushroom clouds over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the impact that science and technology would have on the continued security of our world became catastrophically apparent. America nearly lost the race to build the atomic bomb; it could not risk such a close call again.

With the help of Albert Einstein and other trusted advisors, President Harry S. Truman commissioned a top-secret residential development in a remote area of the Pacific Northwest, one that would serve to protect and nurture America's most valuable intellectual resources. There our nation's greatest thinkers, the über-geniuses working on the next era of scientific achievement, would be able to live and work in a supportive environment.

The best architects and planners were commissioned to design a welcoming place for these superlative geniuses to reside, an area that would offer the best education for their children, the best healthcare, the best amenities and quality of life. A community was created to rival the most idyllic of America's small towns - with one major difference: this town would never appear on any maps. At least, none that haven't been classified "eyes only" by the Pentagon.

Thus, the town of Eureka was born. But for all its familiar, small-town trappings, things in this secret hamlet are anything but ordinary. The stereotype of the absent-minded professor exists for a reason, and most of the quantum leaps in science and technology during the past 50 years were produced by Eureka's elite researchers. Unfortunately, scientific exploration is rarely what one expects, and years of experiments gone awry have yielded some peculiar by-products.

From unrequited love to professional jealousy, from addiction to depression, the problems of Eureka's townsfolk stem from life's myriad of everyday challenges. But with the population's unique talents, troubled psyches and limitless resources, these small-town concerns have a way of becoming big-time problems. It is at that intersection, where human frailty and super-science collide, that Eureka begins....

JACK CARTER (COLIN FERGUSON) U.S. Marshal Jack Carter is sharp and charming, with a quick wit and a street-smart edge. Dedicated first and foremost to his career, a recent separation from his wife has left him at odds with his teenage daughter, Zoe, whose brushes with the law keep Carter nearly as busy as his day job. In fact, Zoe's latest escapade has Carter transporting her home in his custody when their car crashes outside the town of Eureka.

ALLISON BLAKE (SALLI RICHARDSON-WHITFIELD) Allison Blake, the government liaison between Eureka and the Pentagon, provides Jack Carter with a steady flow of professional and romantic frustrations. Charged with reporting on the progress of Eureka's citizens as well as their temperamental innovations, Allison grapples with an endless stream of crises and moral dilemmas.

BEVERLEY BARLOWE (DEBRAH FARENTINO) A brilliant psychotherapist, Beverly Barlowe's clients include international dignitaries, celebrities and even heads of state. Now she lends her highly trained ear to Eureka's troubled psyches and has come to learn all of the town's most intimate secrets. Beverly's undeniable sex appeal is not lost on Jack Carter, who finds her a force to be reckoned with ... and one who might be hiding a few secrets of her own.

HENRY DEACON (JOE MORTON) Henry Deacon is a true jack-of-all-trades. Masquerading as the local mechanic, his feats of engineering are a constant source of wonder and amusement. Whether outfitting Eureka's police cruisers with the latest and greatest gadgets or inventing a global air-conditioning system, Henry has the keen ability to figure out the mechanics of nearly any contraption. So why is Henry such a dedicated do-gooder? Perhaps he sees his work in Eureka as a chance to redeem himself for the sins of a mysterious and complicated past.

ZOE CARTER (JORDAN HINSON) Zoe Carter is Jack Carter's defiant, delinquent, and also terribly intelligent daughter. Though Zoe tries to keep up her "bad girl" image, behind her attitude and piercings she's just another young woman who wants her absentee father to pay her some attention. And what's the best way to attract a cop's attention? Consistently put yourself at odds with the law something that Zoe has become quite adept at doing. But in truth, reuniting her divorced parents is her ultimate goal a factor that makes dating a difficult prospect for Carter.

NATHAN STARK (ED QUINN) Nathan Stark is a Nobel-prize winning mathematician, Eureka's head researcher and Allison Blake's estranged husband. Charming to a fault and keenly brilliant, he gives Jack Carter a run for his money in the contest for Allison's romantic interest, but Stark's professional desire to push the boundaries of science eventually compromise his personal integrity. Stark is still in love with Allison, which explains why he has not yet granted her a divorce. Carter's arrival in "his town" and budding relationship with Allison sets up Stark as Carter's bitter rival.

JO LUPO (CERICA CERRA) Josefina "Jo" Lupo is Eureka's deputy sheriff, a New Jersey girl and former U.S. Army Ranger. The eccentric residents of Eureka try her patience, but they've grown accustomed to her bluster and appreciate her dedication to their safety. At first, Jo is resentful of having to report to an outsider when Jack Carter is given the sheriff's job, but she comes to gain respect for his talents and becomes his trusted partner in maintaining the peace. Now, if only her personal life could be as rewarding....

JIM TAGGART (MATT FREWER) Jim Taggart is Eureka's "biological containment specialist." If it walks, talks, eats, breathes, or bleeds, it falls within Taggart's domain. A big brute of an Aussie (or so he claims), Taggart often butts heads with the sheriff and townsfolk who refuse to appreciate the delicate and unique wildlife situation in Eureka. Luckily for Carter, Taggart knows every breed of animal, bird, and insect like the back of his hand and he's got the tools to handle any situation.

DOUGLAS FARGO (NEIL GRAYSTON) Douglas Fargo is the funny, lovable and put-upon executive assistant to the director of Global Dynamics. Blessed with great intelligence but cursed with terrible luck, Fargo seems forever stuck in his subservient role, even as his pet projects showcase his unlimited potential. Fargo's inability to control his curiosity frequently lands him in trouble, much to the chagrin of his disapproving mentor, Nathan Stark.
