Robin Ellis - Captain Ross Poldark

Robin Ellis played Ross Poldark the central character in the series Poldark. In his autobiography,Winston Graham author of the Poldark novels states that the character of Ross was, in part, based upon a fighter pilot he met during the war. In the first Poldark novel, Ross Poldark, he returns home to Cornwall from the American War of Independence. He learns to his dismay that his sweetheart, Elizabeth, is promised in marriage to his cousin, Francis, and he is dealt the worst blow of his life. Dark, brooding and introspective, things look bleak for Ross on his return.


Robin Ellis was born in London at the height of WW2 on January 8, 1942. He says he never wanted to be anything but an actor and whilst studying history at Cambridge and performed in over twenty five plays. Apart from his work in Poldark he also appeared in Elizabeth R, The Moonstone, Sense and Sensibility (which also featured Clive Francis), The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, She Loves Me (Robin sings!), and Fawlty Towers. He starred with Lee Remick in The Europeans, and The Good Soldier. If you are a Poldark fan you will be particularly interested to know that in the TV movie The Curse of King Tut's Tomb, he was reunited on the screen with the beautiful Angharad Rees.


His most recent appearance was in Heartbeat and Wallender, both in 2006, although he is still in demand as a a narrator for various documentaries. 


Robin Ellis is also an author and he has written amongst other books, Making Poldark, a book about the tv series.


He and his wife Meredith live between London and and the south of France. The Ellis brothers are pretty talented, Robins brother Jack Ellis is also an actor well known for his work in Bad Girls and who has just finished a role in the long running british drama Coronation Street as Bookmaker Harry Mason.
