Raised by a family of cops, Shawn (Roday) possesses uncanny powers of observation honed by his police officer father Henry (Corbin Bernsen, LA Law). Rather than obeying his father's request to join the police force and make him proud, Shawn tries his hand at a variety of jobs, from working as a footwear model to becoming a Weiner-mobile driver.

Whilst spending days in and out of jobs, Shawn can't keep his acute skills hidden and so, for the fun of it he makes a habit of calling in with mystery-solving tips to the police - but his knowledge soon makes him a crime suspect. In order to clear his name, the unlikely sleuth uses his charm and well-tuned talent to convince the Santa Barbara police department that he is a psychic. Although the cops, especially Police Chief Carl Lassiter (Timothy Omundson, Jericho, Mission Impossible 3) are highly sceptical of Shawn's explanation, they hire him to solve tough cases.

Aided by his reluctant best friend Gus (Hill), Shawn launches his own investigative agency, Psych. They soon set out to solve a variety of kooky mysteries including: death at a spelling bee, a haunting at a sorority house, a ghostly stalking, a cat used as a witness, and underground poker.
