One of the 80's great Cult TV series.
Knight Rider was first aired on September 26th 1982 and ran until August 1986. The show followed the adventures of Michael Knight and his car KITT who work for the mysterious organisation, Foundation for Law and Government, fighting crime and rooting out evil which the law cannot touch.
Created by Glen A Larson and starring David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, the show was a hit from the first episode. Larson is on record as saying he wanted to create a modern version of the classic TV show "The Lone Ranger" the spirit of the West in the 20th Century. The role of the heroes trusty steed is filled by the original smart car K.I.T.T. (Knight Industries Two Thousand).
For many KITT was as much the star of the show as Hasselhoff. More intelligent, less impulsive and more cultured than Michael Knight, KITT could drive himslef and keep in contact with Michael via a wrist communicator or "comlink" (long before mobile phone technology). There is an arguement that KITT actually was not the car, but the computer inside the car. Larson has stated "The car is Knight 2000, KITT is the computer onboard, .The car is one, and KITT is the knickname for the onboard computer. In fact in a number of episodes the two are seperated briefly.
KITT is a Pontiac Trans Am modified by Knight Industries. Bullet proof, capable of speeds over 300 mph, and with turbo boost which allowed KITT to leap over obstacles.
What is Michael Knights mysterious past?
Michael Arthur Long (played in the pilot by Larry Anderson) is seriously injured, with a gunshot wound to the head, whilst working on an industrial espionage case. Thanks to a metal plate in his head (the result of an injury sustained in Vietnam), the bullet was deflected, but caused severe facial damage. FLAG, Foundation for Law and Government took over Michaels medical. Given a new face, Long was resurrected as Micahel Knight (and now played by Hasselhoff), officially dead but very much alive and the perfect agent for FLAG in their war against evil.
Michael and Kitt report directly to FLAG boss Devon Miles played by Edward Mulhare, with a British background Devon is initially unimpressed by Michaels working methods but grows to both boss, friend and mentor to Michael.
