Detective Crews was framed and imprisoned for a crime he did not commit, the brutal murder of a family. After 12 years imprisonment in the toughest of jails and after suffering violent treatment at the hands of both inmates and prison guards, Charlie is proved innocent by DNA evidence. He proceeds to sue the state and wins a muti-million dollar payout and the right to rejoin the LAPD as a detective.

Charlie Crews has understandably been deeply effected by his time in Jail evidence of which can be seen in his obsession with fresh fruit and open spaces and his Zen like view of the world. His initial ignorance and then enjoyment of new technology like digital cameras, mobile phones and the internet is an entertaining and enlighting sub text to the show.
