Kal Penn plays the role of Dr Lawrence Kutner in the hit TV Drama House M.D. created and written by David Shore. Dr Lawrence Kutner was born Lawrence Choudray, he changed his name after his parents were killed in a robbery (they owned a small shop) and he was brought up by Jewish foster parents. his character is open minded and willing to try new things and is dedicated, as his refusal to accept being fired shows when he flipped his number from 6 to 9 during the copetition toearn a place. He first wins the approval of Dr House  when he successfully revives a patient with a defibrillator while in a hyperbaric chamber, one of the results of which is to set fire to her gown and bed  due to the Oxygen rich atmosphere. Similarly, in the episode "Mirror Mirror," he brings a patiant back a again using a defibrillator while the patient's skin was wet, thus shocking himself into unconsciousness at the same time. Defibrillators and Kutner have become a running joke for House n appoints him the "professional defibrillist," a title of which Kutner perversely seems to enjoy. Despite his good humour Dr Lawrence Kutner is a tragic figure which becomes only too apparent in Season 4.

Kal Penn was born, Kalpen Suresh Modi in New Jersey (as were a number of his House Co-stars) on April 23rd 1977. his parents were Hindu Gujarati Indian. After a successful academic journey through highs school and UCLA he started his acting career in 1998 in Express: Aisle to Glory (1998) as Jackie Newton. Since then he has appeared in such high profile shows as 24, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Spin City, Angel, Law & Order SVUand many many more shows.

On his recurring role in 24 as a terrorist "I have a huge political problem with the role. It was essentially accepting a form of racial profiling. I think it's repulsive. But it was the first time I had a chance to blow stuff up and take a family hostage. As an actor, why shouldn't I have that opportunity? Because I'm brown and I should be scared about the connection between media images and people's thought processes?"

On April 8, 2009, Penn announced that he would join the Obama White House as Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement. This necessitated that his character Dr Lawrence Kutner be written out of the TV series House M.D.
