Hugh Laurie plays the lead character Dr Gregory House in the hit medical drama House M.D. The series is now in it's Sixth season and as strong as ever. In season Five the series filmed it's 100th episode quite a landmark achievment.

The irrascible, arrogant, highly intelligent and tortured character of Dr Gregory House is the Chief of Diagnostic Medicine at the fictional Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital and his character is based, in no small part, on the classic fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, the who's character was in turn based on a similarly irrascible scottish medical diagnostician who Conan Doyle (also a Doctor) worked with as a student. Watson to House's Holmes is his much put upon friend Dr James Wilson.

Due to mis-diagnosis House is crippled by chronic pain from an  infarction in his quadriceps muscle (his thigh) which causes him to use Vicodin to manage the pain, the problem is he enjoys the drugs a little too much, again reflecting Holmes' liking for Cocaine. The emotional rollercoaster that House his team and his friends live as they cure the most comlex medical cases make House MD one of the most popular shows of the decade.

The cutting wit and one liners House delivers have become known as Housisms, here are a few examples:

*****

Dr. Foreman: Isn't treating patients why we became doctors?
House: No, treating illnesses is why we became doctors. Treating patients is what makes most doctors miserable.

*****

House: See that -- they all assume I'm a patient because of the cane.
Dr. Wilson: Then why don't you put on a white coat like the rest of us?
House: Then they think I'm a doctor.

*****

House: Fine. I'll ask one of my other friends.
Dr. Wilson: Huh.
House: What? Are you saying I've only got one friend.
Dr. Wilson: Who?
House: Kevin. In Bookkeeping.
Dr. Wilson: Okay, well first of all, his name is Carl.
House: I call him Kevin. It's his secret friendship club name.

Hugh Laurie on the character Dr. Greg House - To me, he's a hero, ... He's not polite. He's not someone you want to take home to meet your mother, necessarily. This is a guy in search of truth. Incidentally, that truth one day could save your life or the life of someone you love. That's a heroic thing.
