Peter Michael Falk was born on the 16th of September 1927 in New York City. His father was Polish and his mother Russian. Falk lost his right eye to cancer when only three years old and has worn a glass eye ever since. Despite this his childhood was pretty normal and he played a lot of sports. In fact when he attended Ossining High School in Westchester County, New York, he was a star athlete as well as president of his senior class. He graduated in 1945, and tried to join up for the end of the war, unfortunately he was refused entry into the armed forces due to his eye sight, and so joined the United States Merchant Marine. He is quoted as saying "There they don't care if you're blind or not, the only one on a ship who has to see is the captain. And in the case of the Titanic, he couldn't see very well, either."
Falk obtained a Masters degree in public administration at Syracuse University in 1953 and went to work in Hartford,
It was here that Falk fell in love with acting first in amateur dramatics with the Mark Twain Masquers and later professionally when he moved to New York to pursue his dream.
His initial work from 1956 to 58 was in theatre, he even appeared on Broadway with Jason Robards, he kicked off his film career in Wind Across the Everglades (1958), The Bloody Brood (1959) and Pretty Boy Floyd (1960). And a star was born he moved from New York to LA and the rest is history
