Breaking news the show will be on TV in the UK in February, according to Sky 1. DVD TO BE RELEASED ON THE 29TH OF MARCH
Caprica is the prequel to Battlestar Galactica, set 50 years before the second Cylon War and the events which led to humanity leaving the twelve colonies and searching for the mythical 13th colony, Earth. Caprica will focus on the story of how the human race built designed and created the robotic Cylons, and how they later lost control of theior creation which rose up against them eventually leading to not only the destruction of their civilisation but also the near extinction of the human species.
Unusually an extended version of the Caprica pilot will debut not on TV but exclusively on DVD on April 21, 2009 (planned so far to only be the US). And at the beginning of 2010, the first season will be broadcast, again in the US and will be made up of the two-hour pilot and eighteen one hour episodes, as with Battlestar Galactica, Caprica will be broadcast on the Sci Fi Channel in the US and on Sky1 in the UK and Eire.
Rumours about a prequel series to Battlestar Galactica began to fly in 2006 around the time of the second season. these originated with Roger D.Moore and David Eyck who began thinking about a golden peaceful age before the Cylons. At the same time the writer/producer Remi Aubuchon (24, The Paper Chase, Chicago Hope), unaware of the ideas about a Battlestar Galactica prequel, was presenting the concept for a series to NBC and the SciFi Channel which involved the relationship between humans and robots and the creration of as slave society. A meeting was arranged, introductions made and the Caprica team was born.
The Set Up for Caprica
Set on Caprica fifty eight years before the events of the Second Cylon War reimagined in the Battlestar Galactica saga, the Twelve Colonies are enjoying a long period of peace and prosperity, a Golden Age if you like. An act of religious fanaticism sets the fates of the Adamas and the Graystones onto a collision course. United in their grief for the loss of their daughters in same event, prominent civil liberties lawyer Joseph Adama (father of Admiral William Adama) and Daniel Graystone, a wealthy Caprica Industrialist, find themselves struggling with bereavment. Daniel becomes possessed by the idea of bringing the young girls back to life and dedicates his enormous weath and technological resources to achieving this seemingly impossible goal. But suprisingly his experiments are suprisingly successful and his technological advances in robotics and AI lead to the inevitable creation of the Cylons. Meanwhile Joseph Adama becomes a sworn opponent of Daniel Graystone and what he believes is an abomination.
NBC Universal Television Studio is developing Caprica, in conjunction with the executive producers of Battlestar Galactica (Ronald D. Moore and David Eick) and 24 writer Remi Aubuchon. Aubuchon wrote the pilot and is set to be the show runner.
The Caprica pilot was directed by Friday Night Lights veteran Jeffrey Reiner.. Battlestar writers Jane Espenson, Michael Taylor, Ryan Mottesheard, and Battlestar Galactica composer Bear McCreary have joined the series' production staff. Espenson will become executive producer of Caprica midway through the first season.
Series producer Jane Espenson says Caprica's tone will not be as dark as in the pilot. "The pilot centered on a very dark moment, this terrorist attack. When we rejoin the show, everyone will still be reeling from [the tragedy], but they'll be beginning, almost subconsciously, to slip back into the patterns of life in which you might catch yourself laughing, making a dark joke at your own behalf, or noticing the absurdities of life again. Caprica is set in an interesting world with technological wonders that are going to be amazing to watch, too. So expect some fun, some funny, and some dazzle."
