What makes certain stars glamorous? It's not just physical beauty, although this definitely helps, maybe it's simply an indefinable touch of magic.
As the launch of the glamorous Lipstick Jungle is beginning to take the country by storm, we thought we would take a look at some of the most glamorous actresses on Playback, and see if you agree with our choices.
Cybill Shepherd definitely fits the definition of a glamorous star, especially in her role as Maddie Hayes in the hit 80's show Moonlighting. Voted Miss Memphis at the tender age of 16, which launched her career as a model, she quickly made a name for herself as a curvy 'real woman', a departure from the trend at the time of Twiggy-type waifs. This led to regular work as a magazine cover girl, and it was a 1970 Glamour magazine cover that caught the eye of film director Peter Bogdanovich. Upon seeing the cover in a supermarket check-out line, Bogdanovich was reported to have said "That's Jacy", referring to the role he was casting - and ultimately offered to Shepherd - in The Last Picture Show (1971). Cybill has built a career as a both singer and actress with her own TV series. Recently she dared Bruce Willis to join her in a reunion episode of Moonlighting.
Erin Gray is perhaps best known as Colonel Wilma Deering, star of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century and one of the most glamorous stars in the science fiction TV series genre.
Gray was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and she moved to California with her mother when she was eight, At the age of 15, Gray had a chance meeting with Nina Blanchard, head of one of Hollywood's top model agencies, and became convinced to pursue a career in modelling.
Within a few years she was considered one of the top models in New York. During this period, she worked as the face of L'Oréal, Max Factor and Bloomingdale's. While living in New York she began to develop an interest in acting, and so her family moved with her to Hollywood.
Gray was one of the first models to successfully crossover into television. Her first appearance on television was in 1967 as a dancer in the variety series Malibu U. After moving to Hollywood, she soon had her first starring role on the mini-series Evening In Byzantium, in 1978. Following good notices, in 1978 Gray was put on a seven year contract at Universal, which led directly to her taking the role of Wilma Deering in Buck Rogers in the 25th Century - at first for a theatrically released movie, then for a recurring TV show.
Gray's trim, shapely figure, augmented by a tight one piece jumpsuit, was popular with the show's predominantly young male audience.
Shortly after Buck Rogers, she appeared in the first season Magnum P.I. episode 'J. Digger Doyle', in which she played security expert Joy "Digger" Doyle of the episode title. The role was planned to become recurring, even possibly a spin-off series, but it did not come about, and it was the character's only appearance in the series. She also went on to play Kate Summers in the 1982-1987 television series Silver Spoons. When that show ended, she took regular film and TV work; in 1993, she had a featured role in Jason Goes To Hell, the ninth entry in the Friday the 13th series. Most recently in 2005 she appeared in the film Siren.
Bringing glamour up to date, we think Lisa Edelstein, a.k.a. Dr Lisa Cuddy in the hit medical drama House is a pretty glamorous actress. She has additional television credits which include her series regular role on "Leap of Faith" and guest turns on "Seinfeld," "Without a Trace," "Frasier" and "ER" and "West Wing" as a high class call girl. Edelstein also works extensively in the realm of voiceover, most recently as "Mercy Graves" on the animated "Superman" and "Justice League" series.
In feature films, Edelstein starred as Ben Stiller's aerobics-obsessed date in "Keeping the Faith," directed by Edward Norton. Additional credits include Mel Gibson's "What Women Want," "Daddy Day Care" with Eddie Murphy, "As Good As It Gets," and the comedies "Say Uncle" and "Grilled" with Ray Romano and Kevin James. She also starred in the dramatic cable feature "Fathers and Sons" opposite Gale Harold.
Another glamorous model turned actress is Ali Larter, Heroes Nikki Sanders. She began modelling at 13 years of age and has built up a pretty impressive list of TV and film work. Ali starred in the successful first and second instalments of the "Final Destination" franchise and opposite Reese Witherspoon in the hit film "Legally Blonde." In addition, Larter enjoyed a successful run on the New York stage in "The Vagina Monologues."
Making her feature-film debut in the blockbuster hit "Varsity Blues," Larter's credits include "A Lot Like Love," "American Outlaws" (starring opposite Colin Farrell), "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" (for writer-director-actor Kevin Smith), "The House on Haunted Hill," (a remake of the original Vincent Price horror classic with Taye Diggs and Geoffrey Rush), and "Drive Me Crazy."
Larter will starred opposite Milla Jovovich in "Resident Evil 3: Extinction" as Claire Redfield, a new character to the film series who appears in the video game "Resident Evil 2." Larter's other film credits include the independent film "Crazy" and the soon-to-be released "Marigold."

Since that time, Shields has graced the covers of hundreds of magazines most notably Time magazine as the "Face of the Eighties," and Life magazine on three separate occasions At age 9, Shields began her extensive film career when she won her first acting role in "Holy Terror" and went on to greater parts as a child film star in Louis Malle's "Pretty Baby," the Palme D'or Award winner at the Cannes Film Festival, and Franco Zeffirelli's "Blue Lagoon." And finally to round off this list of glamorous TV actresses we couldn't miss out Victoria's Secret model Tricia Helfer. The 1992 Ford Supermodel of the World winner and former Elite model has graced the covers of such magazines as Elle, Amica Italia and Cosmopolitan UK, and has walked the runways for Christian Dior, Givenchy, Claude Montana, Emanuel Ungaro and other top fashion designers. Besides Victoria's Secret, she has appeared in advertisements for clients including Giorgio Armani, Oil of Olay and Saks Fifth Avenue.
After doing correspondent work for the Canadian style/fashion TV-magazine series Ooh La La, Helfer gained attention as an actress when she played the lead female role of Sarah, the hero's love interest, in the two-hour premiere of the Showtime series Jeremiah. She later memorably played a teen model who tries to cut off her own face in an episode of the hit series C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation, and appears in the comedy short Eventual Wife. As the Cylon character Number 6 in Battlestar Galactica she wields her drop-dead gorgeous looks as a weapon and her keenly intelligent eyes seem to look straight through Gaius Baltar's self serving lies.
