The form lured a host of noted actors and film makers to a medium they previously bypassed, TV. Some stars featured include Kevin Costner,Patrick Swayze, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, Amy Irving, Drew Barrymore, Keifer Sutherland, Christopher Lloyd, Beau Bridges, Harvey Keitel, Sam Waterston, Dom DeLouise, Loni Anderson, John Lithgow, Charles Durning, David Carradine, Danny DeVito, Rhea Perlman, Carrie Ficher, Mark Hamill and many more. Directors for various episodes include, Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese, Robert Zemekis, Jowe Dante, Paul Bartel, Danny DeVito, Burt Reynolds, Timothy Hutton, and of course Steven Spielberg.
As a base source of stories, MCA/Universal bought the rights to over 5000 stories included in 518 issues of the magazine "Amazing Stories", which has been in publication since 1928.
"Amazing Stories" provided an opportunity for filmmakers to develop those little gems of ideas and creative thoughts that are not long enough for feature films and would have been called short stories before the advent of movies and television. The series which has garanared fourteen television awards including 5 Emmys, was produced by Amblin Entertainment and Universal Television. Steven Spielberg served as executive producer, Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall as production executives and the musical scoring by John Williams.
